An unusual but highly effective early education movement from Finland that is gaining popularity worldwide is the concept of ‘forest schools’. These are classes for kindergarten and pre-school age children where they can spend up to 95% of the school day outdoors in the wilderness exploring, playing, and learning about the world around them. Although the concept of the ''forest kindergarten'' has been around in Sweden since the 1950s, such centres are now becoming increasingly mainstream in Scandinavia. Forest Kindergartens have existed in Germany since 1968 but were first officially recognized as a form of daycare in 1993, enabling state subsidies to reduce the daycare fees of children who attended Forest Kindergarten.

The approach “Forest Kindergarten: Local Nature Play” is an ideal approach which is built around giving children regular experiences in nature, visiting their local greenspace and exploring through playful experiences and stimulating all the senses. Waldorf education has long recognized the need for children of all ages to have daily, unstructured outdoor play and pioneered the “Forest Kindergarten” model in the United States. Our students experience nature in all its wonder in daily outdoor classes and play. We know this builds imagination and problem solving from the earliest ages.

It spread to Denmark and Sweden in the 1950s growing out of the Waldorf-Steiner approach to early childhood education that was child-led and play-based, with adults as facilitators not teachers. Forest kindergarten or forest preschool is an education system where the classes take place in forests or woodlands. The curriculum is mostly Montessori or Reggio-inspired and guided entirely by what the children find interesting, relevant and personally meaningful. Today, some 80 per cent of one- to five-year-olds attend preschool in Sweden, if only for a few hours a day. This is high by international standards, and one explanation lies in Sweden’s large share of dual-earner families. Another contributing factor is Sweden’s maximum-fee policy, which makes childcare affordable for everyone. Forest Kindergarten models a Forest School approach for the Early Years, and is based around child-centred learning through play.
